Hawaii’s Carissa Moore won her third-round heat Thursday at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
Moore had a two-wave total of 16.70, Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore had a 16.54 and Bronte Macaulay, also of Australia, posted a 12.23.
Hawaii’s Tatiana Weston-Webb (15.66) finished second and Coco Ho (15.37) placed third in a third-round heat won by France’s Johanne Defay (17.20).
In the second round, Ho beat fellow Hawaii surfer Malia Manuel 14.50 to 14.36.
In the men’s Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, held at the same location, Hawaii’s Ezekiel Lau and Sebastian Zietz won their second-round heats.
Lau beat Brazil’s Filipe Toledo 12.33 to 11.77 and Zietz defeated Australia’s Jack Freestone 16.40 to 14.00.
Weidner 29th in 200 individual medley
The University of Hawaii’s Franziska Weidner finished 29th in the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday at the NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships in Indianapolis.
Weidner, a junior from Nurenberg, Germany, finished in 1 minute, 58.19 seconds in her preliminary heat. The top 16 out of 65 swimmers advanced to the final.
Madison Sthamann, a junior, will compete in the 3-meter diving event today and the platform competition Saturday, while junior Byndis Hansen will swim in the 100 freestyle Saturday.
