The inaugural Shave Ice Invitational may have melted a bit. Due to a scheduling conflict, the machine that creates one of Hawaii’s favorite cold treats might not be part of today’s festivities at the new beach volleyball complex at Irvine Valley College.
It still will be cool — pun intended — said IVC Director of Volleyball Tom Pestolesi. Three months removed from his volunteer stint with the Hawaii women’s indoor team, the former Rainbow Warrior All-American is playing host to the fifth-ranked Rainbow Wahine beach squad in a reverse homecoming for Pestolesi.

“We’re honored to have UH as part of the opening of our new facility,” said Pestolesi, back on the IVC campus as the head coach of the Lasers women’s and men’s indoor and women’s beach teams. “It’s great for our kids. We can tell them things they need to do but until they play against better competition they might not get it. They’ll get a reality check.”
The fifth-ranked SandBows, led by All-Americans Nikki Taylor and Emily Maglio, head a field that includes TCU (7-3), Stanford (5-2) and host IVC (1-2). The host Lasers won the inaugural California Community College Athletic Association team state title in 2015 and finished second last season.
Today is the first stop on Hawaii’s spring break California tour that includes Wednesday’s dual at Zuma Beach against No. 2 Pepperdine, and concludes with the Big West Challenge at Huntington Beach with conference teams Long Beach State, ranked No. 6, Cal Poly, Sac State and CSUN.
Of the 14-member traveling squad, only Maglio and freshman Norene Iosia have been competing on the Wahine indoor and beach teams. Jeff Hall also has been doing double duty as the head beach coach and the associate indoor head coach.
“It’s nice to have the single-mindedness, that Emily and Norene aren’t being pulled both ways,” Hall said as the team prepared to leave Friday. “We’re looking forward to this road trip, it will be long, but it’s a good opportunity to play some good teams.
“These are really important matches for us this week. We’re stoked to be going to IVC, there’s a great connection with ‘Pesto’ and us. We’re spending Saturday at their house. There’s been a great history of top volleyball players who hang out there.”
Pestolesi is married to former Wahine All-American Diane Sebastian.
Saturday included a barbecue and an outdoor movie, the obvious choice being “The Sandlot.”
The $250,000 facility at IVC is almost 30,000 square feet with five courts, state-of-the-art net systems and fine-grain sand. It replaced the smaller, three-court space dedicated to the sport.
As for the shave ice, Pestolesi said he’ll figure out something, “even if it means putting ice cubes in cups with some syrup.”
