What’s there now: Stairs. They lead to a bare lawn now, but will eventually continue to the restaurant. The stairs, parking lot and other infrastructure were put in as part of Phase 1.

To begin: Phase 1 of the project comprises bright and shiny teaching labs for classes in American/European and Asian cuisines. Classes start in the fall.

Last week the Culinary Institute of the Pacific invited some folks over to see its new Diamond Head campus. It was a proud moment, more than 20 years in the making. Still, some of the invited guests were confused — they thought they were going to see a restaurant. “The most common question I get is ‘Where’s the restaurant?’” University of Hawaii President David Lassner said during his remarks at the preview event March 28.
Some people are even calling trying to get reservations.
Don’t do that.
It will be several years before a restaurant meal is served on this property, the former site of the Army’s Cannon Club. Conrad Nonaka, CIP director, said more funding must be secured before ground can even be broken.
The teaching kitchens were the immediate priority. “The decision was made to put the students first,” Lassner said.
So, no, you’re not going to find a restaurant on the slopes of Diamond Head. But here’s what you will find in the photos above…
