Hilo Bay was closed to the public Monday because of a 10,000-gallon sewage spill.
A blocked sewer line along Waianuenue Avenue cause sewage to enter Wailuku River, which flows to the bay, Hawaii County Civil Defense said. All parks within the breakwater also were closed.
Warning signs will remain in place until state health officials determine the water is safe, Civil Defense officials said.
On Maui, meanwhile, the county said about 4,125 gallons of sewage flowed
Monday from a pipe at
296 Alamaha St. into a drainage ditch along the back side of the property.
No wastewater reached the ocean. County officials said the spill site was cleared and disinfected.
