It took until the last week of the regular season for Hawaii to clinch hosting duties for this Saturday’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament quarterfinal.
It took that long, also, for the Rainbow Warriors to have someone named player of the week from the MPSF. Senior setter Jennings Franciskovic was honored on Monday as the 14th and final awardee of the regular season.
Franciskovic helped lead Hawaii (24-4, 14-4) to two victories over UCLA last week, including Saturday’s four-set win in which he came within a block of his first career triple-double. Against the Bruins in the regular-season finale, Franciskovic had 34 assists, 11 digs and nine blocks.
“The thing that stood out this weekend was his serving,” Warriors coach Charlie Wade said. “His serving was really good, very consistent, very effective, and it disrupted what (UCLA) wanted to do.
“And then there’s his blocking. In Set 1 Saturday, he had a solo, our only block of that set, then he had a solo in Set 2 that helped open the flood gates. (Hawaii finished with a season-high 17 blocks). His blocking was real important for us. He was a difference-maker.”
In Set 2 on Saturday, the 6-foot-5 Franciskovic was in on five consecutive blocks and added a kill to help Hawaii pull away at 12-6.
For the series, he had a combined 77 assists, 19 digs, 10 blocks and three kills.
The third-seeded Warriors will host sixth-seeded Pepperdine (10-11, 8-10) at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center. Hawaii swept the Waves twice at the Sheriff Center in February.
Ticket sales Monday were described as “brisk,” with an estimated 2,000 sold. Prices range from $6 for students to $13 for seniors and $17-$19 for adults.
Also Monday, Hawaii remained at No. 4 in both the AVCA Top 15 and the Ratings Percentage Index.
