A Maui man died Saturday after he was found floating in the water off a North Shore beach in Spreckelsville, Maui, firefighters said.
A swimmer found the man, who was in his late 50s, floating near shore at about 6:20 p.m. and brought him to shore at Camp One beach off Stable Road. Beachgoers performed CPR on the man until firefighters arrived and took over.
Paramedics also responded and provided advanced life-support care, but the man died at the scene.
66-year-old rescued from water in Waikiki
Honolulu lifeguards found a 66-year-old man floating unconscious in waters off Kaimana Beach on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred close to 11:50 a.m.
The man was treated and taken in critical condition to a hospital, according to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services.
Admitted killer charged in mother’s murder
A 26-year-old Honolulu man who confessed to killing his mother a year ago has been charged with second-degree murder.
Yu Wei Gong was arrested and charged by Honolulu police at about noon Sunday, shortly after being released from a hospital where he had been since Tuesday. His bail was set at $2 million.
Detectives have recovered human remains at a Waikiki apartment, and the identification is still pending, police said Sunday.
The remains were discovered after police executed a search warrant of the apartment Wednesday.
They were taken for examination to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.
A neighbor who lived at the residential building at 414 Launiu St. said he heard that Gong and his mother had gotten into a fight when she refused to give him money for his school tuition.
Gong attended Kapiolani Community College from fall 2011 to spring 2016 and also was registered for classes at Honolulu Community College in 2014.
His mother, Liu Yun Gong, was a licensed massage therapist and had attended Guangzhou Medical College and operated a massage salon in Duyun, China, her website said.
She had attended the Hawaii Massage Academy in 2011, and her son also attended classes there in 2012.
Suspect held in attack on homeless man
A 50-year-old man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of burglary after he attacked a homeless man in his tent near Honolulu International Airport, police said.
The suspect entered a 53-year-old man’s tent with a weapon at about 7:50 a.m. Saturday and struck the victim, causing injury, police said. An ambulance responded and took the victim to a hospital, where he was treated and released.
Police located the suspect at about 11:35 a.m. Saturday and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree burglary and two drug offenses.
According to state law, a person commits burglary when he enters or remains unlawfully in a building to commit a crime. A place of residence, even a tent, can be included in the definition of a building, police said.
