Qigong featured during Chinese medicine workshop

Similar to tai chi, qigong involves meditation, controlled breathing and movement exercises to relieve stress, improve balance, loosen muscles and build focus andstamina.

Qigong grandmaster Effie Chow, a former member of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy, will be a presenter at a workshop on traditional Chinese medicine from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Toho No Hikari Hawaii, 3510 Nuuanu Pali Drive.

The event is sponsored by the University of Hawaii’s John A. Burns School of Medicine’s Department of Complementary and Integrative Medicine and the Hawaii Health Foundation. It is meant for medical professionals, students and the public.

Similar to tai chi, qigong involves meditation, controlled breathing and movement exercises to relieve stress, improve balance, loosen muscles and build focus and stamina. Chow, founder of the East West Academy of Healing Arts in San Francisco, will lead qigong exercises after sessions that include discussions of evidence-based research on these topics:

>> “Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine,” 2 p.m.

>> “Fundamentals of Qigong,” 3 p.m.

>> “Fundamentals of Acupuncture,” 4 p.m.

Also a presenter: Dr. Elizabeth Chen-Christenson, qigong instructor, certified harp therapist and associate clinical professor at JABSOM.
