News that The Don Quijote Group is buying Hawaii’s Times Supermarkets chain raises a lot of questions for consumers.
Don Quijote said its immediate plan is to continue operating all of the Times chain’s stores and keep all 1,600 workers. But, when the economies of scale settle after the deal closes later this year, which stores will remain of the 17 Times Supermarket stores, five Big Save Markets, Shima’s Supermarket, and Fujioka’s Wine Times?

ABC Stores adds dining to its inventory
More than 50 years have passed since the first ABC store opened. There are now scores of the visitor-tailored convenience shops in Hawaii, with most wedged into Waikiki. Next week, ABC Stores will open yet another space. But instead of browsing for souvenirs, customers will size up a vast assortment of dining options. The homegrown company is switching up its portfolio in hopes of riding the multicultural foodie wave with Duke’s Lane Market & Eatery, a mid-Waikiki food hall.
