Kapalua Golf Academy’s Brad Bowen captured the Aloha Section Senior PGA Professional Championship on Monday. Bowen closed with a 1-under-par 72 to finish at 148.
He won by one over defending champion Kevin Hayashi (74–149). It was Bowen’s second Senior PGA title. Eddie Lee (75—150) took third to capture the last qualifying spot in the national championship.
The 29th Senior PGA Professional National Championship is Sept. 28-Oct. 1 at Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, Ariz. It has a field of 264 from all 41 PGA of America sections. Top finishers earn a berth in the 79th Senior PGA Championship in May.
Talented threesome wins at HSJGA Match Play
Danielle Ujimori, Davis Lee and Jake Sequin captured titles at last weekend’s Ka’anapali HSJGA Match Play Championships — the only match-play tournament the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association conducts.
Ujimori clinched the girls title with birdie on the 17th to win, 2 and 1, over Allysha Mae Mateo.
Lee won the Boys 15-18 championship, beating Maui’s Jordan Terada, 4 and 3, in the final.
Lee won the Boys 13-14 title last year. That title went to Sequin this year, after he defeated Dillon Ah Chong, 3 and 2, in the final.
Kozuma captures Aloha Section PGA title
Corey Kozuma won the National Car Rental Aloha PGA Assistant Championship at Hoakalei Country Club with rounds of 72-75.
The victory gives Kozuma the Aloha Section PGA Assistant’s Championship title. He collected $1,800 and will represent the Aloha Section PGA at the 41st National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship, Nov. 9-12, at PGA Golf Club (Wanamaker Course) in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The $100,000 tournament has a 126-player field, made up of the top four from last year and assistants and apprentices from the 41 PGA sections.
John Hearn and Todd Rego tied for second, one shot back at Hoakalei. Hearn won the playoff and is first alternate.
Jaffurs qualifies for U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship
Kahuku’s Isaac Jaffurs earned Hawaii’s lone spot in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship by winning the local qualifier at Leilehua. Jaffurs shot 3-under-par 68 and will go to his first USGA national championship.
The Mid-Amateur is for golfers 25 and older.
The championship will be at Capital City Club-Crabapple Course, in Woodstock, Ga., Oct. 7-12.
Casey Watabu, the 2006 U.S. Amateur Public Links Champion, tied for second with Tyler Isono and earned first-alternate status on the third playoff hole.
Teraoka takes fourth in rain-shortened event
Hawaii’s AJ Teraoka took fourth at the rain-shortened Trusted Choice Big “I” National Championship last week at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss. The tournament is the third-oldest junior golf event in the U.S.
Teraoka finished at 1-under-par 143 with rounds of 73-70. Only five players, in a field of 99, broke par in a tournament scheduled for 72 holes but cut in half because of bad weather.
Salt Lake City’s Blake Tomlinson, who is headed to the University of Utah, won with 140.
North Carolina’s Emily Hawkins (71—141) took the girls title. High school senior Jaelin Ishikawa (77—157), from Pukalani, tied for 18th and Honolulu freshman Karissa Kilby (76—159) was 20th in a field of 53.
Honolulu’s Davis Lee (80—154) tied for 50th among the boys.
Okino ties for third at JLPGA event
Honolulu’s Cyd Okino tied for third in a 36-hole JLPGA Step-Up Tour event last month, then earned a share of 17th Friday in the San-In Godo Bank Ladies.
In July, the Punahou alum shot 68-72 in the ANA Princess Cup at Hokkaido Country Club to finish six shots out of first and win $9,750.
She shot a final-round 69 Friday to finish 17th, at 3-over-par 219, and collect another $2,000 at Oyama Plain Golf Club.
