Brian Viloria improved to 38-5 in his professional boxing career with a fifth-round TKO of Miguel Cartagena on Saturday in a super flyweight bout at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
Viloria, who has 23 wins by knockout, stopped Cartagena (15-4-1, 6 KOs) three rounds shy of the scheduled eight-round limit.
The win was Viloria’s second since suffering a ninth-round TKO against Roman Gonzalez in October 2015.
Viloria, a four-time world champion, struggled the first two rounds before pouring it on in the fourth round and eventually stopping it early in the fifth.
Local volleyball teams go 0-3 on mainland
Rachel Reedy finished with 16 kills and Emma Tecklenburg added 14, but the Chaminade volleyball team lost to Cal State East Bay 24-26, 25-17, 25-18, 13-25, 15-8 in the D2 West Region Showcase on Saturday in Monmouth, Ore.
The Silverswords fell to 5-3.
Lindsey Ray had 15 kills and Seabury Hall graduate Kiki Leuteneker added 12 for the Pioneers (6-2).

HPU runners win cross country titles
Hawaii Pacific’s Brooke Gottmeier and Amos Kipchumba won individual titles at the Hawaii Hilo Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at the Grand Naniloa Banyan Golf Course.
Gottmeier finished the 5K women’s race in 19:34.2. Hawaii’s Sienna Santiago was second in 19:54.1 and teammate Lisa Tashiro was third in 20:00.6.
Hawaii won the team title with 27 points, HPU was second with 31, Hawaii Hilo third with 77 and Chaminade fourth with 100.
Kipchumba completed the 5K men’s race in 16:17.8. Sharks teammates Matt Whitworth (16:39.6) was second and Jimmy Chagoya (17:07.5) placed third.
The HPU men won the dual meet against Chaminade 15-48.
3 from Hawaii at Senior Women’s Amateur
Honolulu’s Patricia Schremmer shot a 9-over-par 81 and is tied for 55th after the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur on Saturday in Portland, Ore.
Aiea’s Mira Jang carded a 90 and is tied for 117th and Kula’s Lisa Judge shot a 92 and is tied for 125th.
Lara Tennant of Portland, Ore., leads with a 73 at Waverley Country Club.
The top 64 after two rounds of stroke play will qualify for match play.
Silversword men blanked by CS Stanislaus
The Chaminade men’s soccer team lost to Cal State Stanislaus 1-0 on Saturday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Ryan Chaney scored at 2:18 for the Warriors (2-1-1).
Bernd Buescherhoff made three saves for the Silverswords (1-1).
