Raisa Strom-Okimoto put in the golden goal in the 96th minute, leading the Hawaii soccer team to a 1-0 overtime road win against Arizona State in Tempe on Friday.
Strom-Okimoto put aside a series of near misses — the winning ball was her eighth attempt — when she got far upfield on a breakaway, dribbled to the left goalpost then fired to the far post past the ASU goalkeeper and in for her team-best third score of the season.
It was the first win for the Rainbow Wahine (4-4) at a Pac-12 school since 2013. The Sun Devils fell to 2-4-1.
The Wahine picked up their second straight road win heading into their final nonconference game at Grand Canyon (3-5-1) of the WAC at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Goalkeeper Alexis Mata earned her second straight shutout, tying her career high in saves with eight. Senior forward Sonest Furtado recorded six shots, including four on goal.
Florence eliminated in Hurley Pro semis
Brazil’s Filipe Toledo knocked out Hawaii’s John John Florence in the semifinals of the Hurley Pro on Friday in San Clemente, Calif. Toledo outscored Florence 14.90 to 12.66 in 3- to 4-foot waves at Lower Trestles.
Florence, the 2016 World Surf League champion, defeated France’s Jeremy Flores 14.84 to 13.80 in the quarterfinals.
On the women’s side, Brazil’s Silvana Lima edged Keely Andrew 17.60 to 10.93 to clinch the Swatch Pro title.
HPU men’s soccer ties with Concordia
The Hawaii Pacific men’s soccer team finished in a 1-1 double overtime tie with Concordia (Ore.) on Friday in Portland. Josch Cuerten scored in the 41st minute on a penalty kick, but the Cavaliers (1-3-1) responded in the second half with a goal by Todd Gibbs.
Daniel Arnoll recorded five saves for the Sharks (1-1-1).
Team Miss Behavin wins Billfish tourney
Surfside Marina — Team Miss Behavin claimed the top spot with 1,300 points at the 2017 Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament on Friday in Kailua-Kona. Team members include Captain David Finkelstein and anglers Stephen Weitzen and Jon Niiyama.
In the final day of the tourney, the Texas-based team tagged and released an estimated 125-pound Pacific blue marlin in eight minutes. Japan’s Core Marlin Club earned runner-up honors, followed by Old South Marlin Club — International in third place.
Captain Jeff Fay earned the Henry Chee Award for the fifth time with his score of 1,700 points.
