Hawaii is America’s true melting pot, with many ethnicities represented in our community. Yet many of us have lost the ability to speak our native language.
I was not able to speak Korean but heard it around the house growing up. It wasn’t until I studied in Korea for a year while in college that I really learned the language.
Why is it important? Learning a language really helps you to better understand the culture of the country. Your scope of friends will expand tremendously, it can help your business, retain your cultural identity and allow you to help others who may end up visiting that country.
Many of our viewers enjoy our dramas by reading the English subtitles. But if you know Korean, the dramas could end up being twice as enjoyable if you understand the nuances of the language and culture.
If you’re serious about learning the language, there are 23 Korean-language schools in Hawaii to help you.
