Six Red Cross volunteers from Hawaii are leaving for Puerto Rico to help residents recover from Hurricane Maria.
Four of the volunteers are from Oahu and two are from Hawaii island, the American Red Cross Hawaii chapter said in a release Saturday.
The deployment comes as the Caribbean and parts of the United States have been raked by several intense storms.
Fifty Hawaii Red Cross volunteers have been deployed to provide shelter, food and comfort to victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
For Harvey, a total of 31 volunteers were deployed: 15 from Oahu, 10 from Hawaii island, five from Maui and one from Molokai. For Irma, 19 volunteers were deployed: nine from Oahu, four from Kauai, three from Maui and three from Hawaii island.
Three Hawaii Red Cross team members also have joined the relief efforts long-distance. For instance, one Oahu volunteer is assisting with shelter population counts.
In the last four weeks, the Red Cross, along with community and government partners, has provided 985,000 overnight stays in emergency shelters due to hurricanes. Shelters were opened in eight states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
