The U.S. men’s national volleyball team, with three players from Hawaii competing, won the NORCECA Championship on Sunday by sweeping the Dominican Republic at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Setter and team captain Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) was named the tournament’s most valuable player as the Americans won their 10th NORCECA title with a dominating 25-17, 25-10, 25-12 victory. The U.S. finished the 2017 season with a 5-0 record at the event.
Libero Erik Shoji (Punahou) had four digs and was perfect on seven service-receptions. Reserve setter Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani) was used as a serving sub in Sets 1 and 2. Christenson finished with 22 assists, three digs, two kills, a block and an ace.
Chaminade’s Tatemichi honored by PacWest
Chaminade forward Caitlin Tatemichi has been named the Pacific West Conference women’s soccer player of the week, the league announced Monday.
Tatemichi, a junior from Honolulu, scored a school-record four goals in a 4-1 win over Holy Names on Thursday.
Hawaii Pacific’s Lauren Spencer was named the conference’s defender of the week.
Vulcan women struggle in first round
The Hawaii Hilo women’s golf team is 10th and last after firing a first-round 71-over-par 359 at the Dixie State Fall Invitational on Monday at Hurricane, Utah.
The Vulcans are 56 strokes behind leader Sonoma State at Sand Hollow Golf Course and Resort.
Hilo’s top golfer is Mariah Paiste, who is tied for 39th at 12-over 84.
