House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., takes a question during a town hall meeting Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, at Royal Basket Trucks in Darien, Wis.

DARIEN, Wis. >> House Speaker Paul Ryan says special interests are trying to derail the Republican tax overhaul plan by creating “confusion and chaos.”

Ryan made the comment Monday while speaking to small business leaders at Royal Basket Trucks in Darien, Wisconsin.

Ryan says he’s been telling Republicans that opposition to the plan will only intensify as details are released later this week. Ryan says, “Confusion and chaos is what protects the special interests” and the status quo.

The National Association of Home Builders on Monday withdrew its support for the latest version of the plan because of its removal of a homeownership tax credit.

Despite the growing opposition, Ryan repeated his pledge to pass the tax reform package by the end of the year.
