It’s under a new coach, but the postseason streak continues for the University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team. Kudos to first-year coach, Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, and her Wahine for making it into the NCAA tournament bracket, continuing the proud tradition of legendary coach, Dave Shoji, who’d tapped his protegé when he retired last season.
The Wahine have made the postseason every year since the program’s inception in 1974, except for 1992. This year’s 20-7 season got them tapped for an at-large spot in the subregional to be hosted at the University of Washington — just one flight away, not farther east. Hopefully, the shorter commute will work in the Wahine’s favor in their Friday opener against Illinois — at 3 p.m. Hawaii time — then beyond, well beyond.
Tracking where the defense spending goes

Tapping a $500,000 grant from the Pentagon, the state recently launched a website that aims to flag local business opportunities tied to military spending.
Here’s hoping that by actively tracking the money, the Hawaii Defense Economy website can bring clarity to a concerning fuzziness. According to Chamber of Commerce Hawaii, while billions of dollars have poured into the islands through defense industry contracts, the business community here has had an imprecise fix on who was benefiting.
