Visitor who died snorkeling on Maui is ID’d
An 80-year-old visitor who died this weekend after he became unresponsive while snorkeling off South Maui has been identified by Maui police as Michael Cline of Homer, Alaska.
Cline had been snorkeling alone at Ulua Beach in Wailea on Saturday morning when teenage bodyboarders found him floating facedown about 50 feet from shore, Maui firefighters said.
The bodyboarders brought him to the beach, where other beachgoers began CPR.
Firefighters arrived at about 10:20 a.m. and continued life support measures, but Cline died at the beach.
Firefighters said the ocean was rough at the time, with shorebreak of 6 to 7 feet.
Maui police said Cline’s was the 10th ocean-related death on Maui this year.
