BYU hit three home runs in the first two innings and sent the University of Hawaii softball team to a 10-1 season-opening loss Thursday in the Marucci Desert Classic in Las Vegas.
Briielle Breland launched a two-run homer in the top of the first and Bridget Fleener and Allie Hancock led off the second with back-to-back shots off UH starter Brittany Hitchcock. The Cougars (2-4) peppered UH pitching for 14 hits in the five-inning rout. Hitchcock gave up seven runs on nine hits, struck out one and walked four in three innings. Dana Thomsen gave up three runs on five hits and struck out three in two innings of relief.
BYU sophomore Arissa Paulson struck out six and held UH to three singles in a complete-game win. UH’s Nicole Lopez broke up the shutout in the fifth with a run-scoring fielder’s choice.
The five-day tournament continues today with UH facing Seattle and New Mexico.
Chaminade men fall to No. 20 Cal Baptist
Austin Pope scored 18 points and Brett Reed finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, but the Chaminade men’s basketball team fell to No. 20 Cal Baptist 90-76 in Riverside, Calif.
The Silverswords dropped to 14-10, 9-8 PacWest. The Lancers went to 21-4, 14-3.

Hawaii Hilo women lose to Azusa Pacific
Allie Navarette finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds, but the Hawaii-Hilo women’s basketball team lost to Azusa Pacific 81-62 on Thursday in Azusa, Calif.
Danielle Dacosta added 18 points for the Vulcans (6-14, 4-13 PacWest). The Cougars improved to 25-3, 17-2.

UH men last at John Burns Intercollegiate
The University of Hawaii men’s golf team is 20th and last after shooting a 21-over-par 309 in Thursday’s first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course on Kauai.
UNLV leads the tournament at 270.
The Rainbow Warriors’ top golfers are Justin Arcano and Cameron Kaneko, who are tied for 69th at 4-over-par 76.
The Rebels’ Ban Shintaro is atop the individual leaderboard at 65.
