Two homes sustained a total of $1 million in damage in separate fires over the weekend on Kauai, firefighters said.
About 4:30 p.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to a fire that engulfed a single- story home on Nunu Road in Kapaa. Firefighters brought the blaze under control within minutes of their arrival, but the home was destroyed.
Damage to the home and its contents was estimated at $300,000. No one was home at the time, and firefighters were investigating the cause.
At about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to a fire at a two-story home on North Waiakalua Street in Kilauea.
The fire appeared to have started from an unattended portable burner left on a patio of the home.
The occupants escaped without injury, but the fire caused about $700,000 in damage.
