The U.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday flew a 70-year-old Australian woman to Maui Memorial Medical Center from a cruise ship off Maui.
The captain of the Regatta contacted the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu on Monday afternoon when the woman was experiencing severe abdominal pains. At the time, the Regatta was 276 miles from Maui and on its way back to San Diego.
The Regatta returned back to Maui to meet with the Coast Guard’s MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, which hoisted the woman from the Regatta early Tuesday morning and transported her to Kahului Airport. Local emergency medical services personnel transferred her in stable condition to the hospital.
Ige declares emergency following heavy rain
Gov. David Ige issued an emergency proclamation for Kauai on Tuesday after heavy rain caused landslides onto Kuhio Highway, isolating the communities of Haena and Wainiha near Hanalei.
The landslides occurred Feb. 23 and March 22, prompting the state Department of Transportation to ask for emergency funds to expedite work to secure the slope and prevent future problems.
The proclamation makes available state general funds to be used at the governor’s discretion.
