After 20 miles of trading the lead, it came down to just over half a minute.
Daniel Chun held off defending champion Pat Dolan to win the men’s OC-1 division of the Scott Hawaii State Championship on Saturday. Chun finished the long course from Makai Pier to Magic Island in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 10 seconds, crossing the finish line 33 seconds ahead of Dolan.
The Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association’s ninth event of the season drew 102 entries in OC-1, OC-2, V-1 and surfski for the 20-mile long course. The 12.5-mile short course from Maunalua Bay to Magic Island had 87 entries in OC-1, OC-2, V-1 paddleboard and stand-up divisions.
“It was a great race with the very best of Hawaii’s paddlers and the top paddlers from different areas of the globe,” KIRA executive director Jim Foti said. “It wasn’t a record field, but it was close.”
Borys Markin and Beata Cseke successfully defended their respective surfski titles, Markin claiming the men’s title in 2:10:41, finishing ninth overall. Cseke was the top female in surfski and overall in 2:30:58.
Monica Esquivel edged Nahoku Keala by 14 seconds for the women’s OC-1 title, finishing in 2:36:07. The V-1 division was won by Vance Hashimoto (2:38:05).
It was “That 60s Show” on the short course, with two 60-year-olds winning their respective divisions. Guy Wilding was the first overall male, claiming the surfski title in 1:22:56. Jane McKee was the first female finisher, earning the OC-1 title in 1:33:18.
The men’s OC-1 division was won by Noah Garfield (1:30:22) and the V-1 division went to Kaimi Alencastre (1:46:52).
