Mililani junior Mayu Wise took a giant step forward in her quest for four titles in the Atlas Insurance Agency/HHSAA Judo State Championships on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Wise came out on top in an intense 122-pound final match against Punahou freshman Marisa Iha. She won by shido (penalty).
“It’s feels very great,” Wise said. “It been a very tough season this year, the whole year training every day to become a four-year champion. She (Iha) was very strong. I give her a lot of props and I think she can win the state title some day.”
Senior Amanda Higa finished her career in style and led the Moanalua girls to their first team championship. A three-time OIA champion, Higa defeated Maryknoll’s Taylor Arakaki by ippon in 1:28 at 115 pounds for her second state title.
“They trained hard day in and day out and put their heart into it,” coach Derron Maki said about his Na Menehune champions. “I’ve been with some of them since baby time. It’s such a special moment for all of them, and Amanda Higa, who couldn’t play because of a concussion last year, ended her season and her career with a win. In a way, she defended her state title from her sophomore year.”
Kalani senior Zoe Tateyama, Roosevelt senior Xiaolin Mai, Pearl City senior Jennie Fuamatu and Waipahu junior Precious Tampos earned their second state crowns.
Tateyama, who is now a four-time state placer, scored an upset over defending champion Charlize Jasmine Pascual-Tabuyo, a sophomore who hadn’t lost in Hawaii or nationally since 2013, by ippon at 3:26 in the 139 final.
Pascual-Tabuyo was carried from the mat afterward and treated for an apparent knee injury.
“I hope she’s OK,” said Tateyama, who helped attend to Pascual-Tabuyo afterward. “We’ve been training together (with Team Hawaii) on Sundays. She’s very sweet. Last year against her, I tripped on myself and she pinned me.”
Mai also became a four-time state placer, defeating Punahou’s Maddy Kogachi by shido in the 103 final.
“It’s an honor and humbling,” Mai said. “Not a lot of people can do it.”
Tampos knocked off Moanalua’s Jazmin Lazo by ippon in 1:41 in the 98 final.
“I’ve been working so hard for this, Tampos said. “I was losing at first, so I told myself it’s now or never. I have to try anything I can.”
In the 220 final, Fuamatu got past Moanalua’s Kyrah Hughley by ippon in 1:24.
Moanalua scored 92 team points. Pearl City took second with 72, followed by Kalani in third with 31.
