Roosevelt senior Mari Foster was named the Gatorade Hawaii softball player of the year, the organization announced Monday.
Foster batted .604 (29-for-48) with nine home runs, 34 RBIs, 23 runs scored, a .627 on-base percentage and a 1.333 slugging percentage for the Rough Riders (15-3). She also went 2-0 with a 0.39 ERA, striking out 14 batters while allowing just five hits over 18 innings.
Foster maintained a 3.58 GPA and was class president her first three years of high school and class communications officer this past year.
The award recognizes athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.
Foster, who will attend Pacific Lutheran, is the first Roosevelt player to win the honor.
Rossing to be inducted into swimming hall
University of Hawaii assistant diving coach Anita Rossing will be inducted into the Hawaii Swimming Hall of Fame as part of the 2018 class, the organization announced Monday.
Rossing just completed her 17th season at UH. She also served 12 years as the Swedish national team coach, as vice president of the Hawaii Diving Association and head of the Sunshine Diving Club.
From 1977 to 1988, Rossing competed in the 1984 and ‘88 Olympic Games, two world championships and five European Championships.
Rossing will be one of 15 inductees at the ceremony set for Sept. 8 at the Hale Koa Hotel’s DeRussy Hall.
