A Honolulu District Court judge Friday sentenced to 30 days in jail a man who repeatedly injured his girlfriend’s 3-year-old silky terrier.
The Hawaiian Humane Society said it is the second time in state history that an animal abuser has been sentenced to jail time.
Judge Trish Morikawa also sentenced Steven Boos to perform 50 hours of community service. He pleaded no contest in March to second-degree cruelty to animals.
The judge ordered Boos to begin serving his sentence July 23 and rejected his request for a deferral to have his conviction removed from his criminal record.
The Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release that Tulip, the 7-1/2-pound terrier, suffered multiple injuries while in Boos’ care, including pelvic fractures, broken ribs and internal injuries. A metal plate was implanted to stabilize her pelvis, and a hind leg had to be amputated.
The injuries occurred from May 2017 through October.
The Humane Society said Tulip’s owner relinquished custody of her after an investigation, and Boos pleaded no contest. A veterinary clinic’s staff noticed a pattern of physical trauma, including head injuries, a fractured pelvis and broken ribs. The staff notified the Humane Society about concerns of the repeated, severe injuries.
“While Tulip survived the ordeal, she continues to suffer from the abuse inflicted by Boos,” the news release said.
Tulip was adopted by another family through the Hawaiian Humane Society.
