MAUI
Hiker, paddlers rescued
Maui firefighters responded to five people who ran into trouble in the ocean after strong wind pushed them out to sea in Ukumehame over the weekend.
At about 2:45 p.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to a 39-year-old woman who sustained an ankle injury at Makamakaole Gulch. Firefighters and medics hiked to the woman and carried her out.
During the rescue, firefighters received a call about five people — two stand-up paddleboarders and three kayakers — in distress. Firefighters aboard Air 1 helicopter, a rescue watercraft and the Coast Guard responded to Ukumehame at about 3:20 p.m.
Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsuhiro, Maui Fire Department spokesman, said a private vessel rescued four people from the ocean.
Firefighters and the Coast Guard continued its search for the fifth person when the watercraft unit located and rescued the individual about 2 miles offshore.
No injuries were reported.
