Hawaii’s Carissa Moore won her first- and second-round heats at the Women’s Corona Open J-Bay on Friday at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.
Moore won her opening-round heat with a two-wave total of 14.77. Florida’s Caroline Marks was second (11.90) and Hawaii’s Coco Ho placed third (7.43). In the second round, Moore scored a 13.47 to top California’s Courtney Conlogue, who posted an 8.26.
Hawaii’s Tatiana Weston-Webb won her first-round heat with a 16.37. Conlogue was second with a 16.27 and Australia’s Keely Andrew finished third with a 14.40. Weston-Webb advanced directly to the third round by virtue of having the highest score of the opening round.
Hawaii’s Malia Manuel finished second in her opening-round heat with a 13.50.
In the second round, Ho beat Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons 15.50 to 14.10, and Manuel advanced when Brazil’s Silvana Lima withdrew due to a knee injury.
U.S. men’s volleyball team loses to Russia
The U.S. men’s national volleyball team rested its starters — including two from Hawaii — but got some strong play from the second team in a loss to Russia, 25-22, 25-21, 25-21 on Friday in the Final Six of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League in Lille, France, on Friday.
Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani) replaced Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) at setter, while Erik Shoji (Punahou) gave way to Dustin Watten at libero. Kawika Shoji had one ace in Set 3.
Both teams went into the match having already qualified for the today’s semifinal, where the U.S. will play France and Russia will face Brazil.
