Punahou alum Allisen Corpuz shot a second-round 70 for a 140 total, finishing tied for 23rd to qualify for match play in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in Kingston Springs, Tenn., on Tuesday.
Another Hawaii golfer, Claire Choi, did not advance after a second-round 85 (161). The qualifying score was 144, with nine golfers who tied at 145 competing today for the final playoff spot in the 64-player match-play field.
Corpuz will play Yealimi Noh of Concord, Calif., in today’s match play.
Lucy Li became the third player in history to earn medalist honors in both the U.S. Girls’ Junior and U.S. Women’s Amateur championships in the same year. The 15-year-old from Redwood Shores, Calif., matched the U.S. Women’s Amateur scoring record of 133 by carding a 6-under 65 at The Golf Club of Tennessee. She shared the top honor with Selin Hyun, 17, of the Republic of Korea. Li’s 65 was the lowest in the two rounds of play.
Li joins 1986 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion Michiko Hattori and two-time champion Vicki Goetze (1989 and 1992) as the only golfers to achieve the medalist double.
KRU mercy rules West Fargo, N.D.
The KRU baseball team from Hawaii captured its fourth win in pool play by defeating West Fargo (N.D.) 12-2 at the 10u Cal Ripken World Series in Vincennes, Ind.
The Hawaii team scored six runs in the first, capped off by a bases-clearing double by Tyler Millan. Kupono Tabangcura, BunZ Banis, Sky Hirota and Leland Ramos all had multiple hits to power the KRU offense.
Banis led the team, going 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Trenton Caliboso struck out three and scattered five hits over 4 2/3 innings to earn the win.
KRU has already advanced into the single-elimination part of the tournament, which will begin on Thursday.
The team wraps up pool play tomorrow against Kennewick, Wash., at 6 p.m.
Hawaii Diamonds advance to quarters
The Hawaii Diamonds completed pool play by defeating Moss Point (Miss.) 7-4 on Tuesday.
Cody Branco (2-for-2, 3 runs scored) and Caleb Luifi (2-for-4) helped the 12u Diamonds’ offense.
The game was tied until the sixth, when Kolby Gushiken led off with a line drive single to centerfield. The Diamonds manufactured the go-ahead run with a walk, a groundout and a misplayed bunt. Eddie Ogasawara drove in two insurance runs with a single.
Trent Nagamine secured the victory with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Diamonds (2-1) will play South Lexington (Ky.) today in the quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m.
Moreton Bay leads Billfish
The Austrailian Fishing Club maintained its lead with 700 points after the second day of the 59th annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in Kona.
Last year’s winner, Surfside Marina, and Kona Game Fishing Club-Osaka are in second with 600 points.
The day was calm, with only two Pacific blue marlin and three short nose spearfish tagged and released. Four ahi, all under 200 pounds, were also boated as the other teams continued their battle for points.
Stephen Chow, aboard Foxy Lady, quickly put up 100 points just 40 minutes in, by tagging and releasing a short nose spearfish estimated at 30 pounds. Mari Arakawa, aboard Kila Kila, put Japan’s Olympian Dream Fishing Club on the scoreboard in just two minutes when she tagged and released an estimated 25-pound short nose spearfish.
The final billfish was tagged and released by New Zealand’s Bay of Islands-Team Endeavour. Fishing aboard Maggie Joe, angler Greg Thompson tagged his estimated 50-pound short nose spearfish in just 60 seconds. Team Endeavour is in fourth with 400 points.
The five-day Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament continues through Friday.
