Timothy Hurley’s article was very interesting and informative (“Hawaii income stats climb, but so does the cost of living,” Star-Advertiser, Sept. 19).

It is high time to repeal the Jones Act of 1920. Everything we buy — automobiles, food, fuel, building materials and more — comes from the mainland on U.S.-flagged and -crewed ships, and the cost to bring them to Hawaii keeps skyrocketing.

I recently contacted U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz about this and received a lot of rhetoric on why the Jones Act is good for Hawaii.

The average consumer in Hawaii doesn’t know anything about this obsolete and archaic act. It is time to pull the plug on the Jones Act and Hawaii’s congressional members in Washington who support it.
