Hawaii junior goalkeeper Lex Mata was named the Big West defensive player of the week on Monday, the second time in 2018 she has been conveyed the honor.
Mata posted shutouts on consecutive days in her team’s 2-0 and 4-0 wins over North Dakota State and Grand Canyon, totaling 10 saves over the weekend. She was coming off a career-high 12 stops in a 2-0 loss at San Francisco the previous week.
It was her fourth career weekly award; she had two last year. She has four shutouts this season for UH (5-3-1).
UH opens Big West play this week, at UC Irvine on Friday and at Cal State Northridge on Sunday.
