Following the “Magnum P.I.” reboot’s spectacular opening shot, it was all downhill.
This remake’s producers appear to have learned absolutely nothing in the 30 years since the original series went off the air.
Once again, outsiders exploit Hawaii’s beauty, shooting in the islands without casting a single Hawaiian or local in a lead role, creating inauthentic misrepresentation.
Somehow, members of ethnic groups mostly unrepresentative of Hawaii’s actual population have all the major parts.
While the First Amendment guarantees TV/filmmakers the constitutional right to be culturally insensitive, the state should withhold tax breaks and other incentives from productions that neglect and don’t reflect the islands’ diversity, which not only is racist but discriminates against Hawaii’s talented actors (even Detective Gordon Katsumoto is played by a San Francisco actor).
Considering “Magnum P.U.’s” pro-military propaganda, details of the program’s collaboration with the Pentagon must be disclosed, too.
