The process to determine the qualifications and fitness of a nominee to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court has become more contentious and divisive. The Republican senators have turned the confirmation process into a political showdown over control of ideological issues such as Roe v. Wade.
Republicans are pushing the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh despite numerous sexual misconduct allegations and his lack of judicial temperament.
Why? Kavanaugh appears to favor the abolition of abortion rights. Their actions will severely damage the credibility of both the court and the Senate.
To end the vicious and toxic cycle of the confirmation process, reform is needed. One idea that has been floated around for years is term limits for Supreme Court justices. Many believe it is the best alternative because presidents are likely to nominate centrist candidates, thus eliminating partisan wrangling.
Reforming the confirmation process would restore people’s confidence in the legitimacy of their government, which is essential for the survival of our democracy.
