It is unfortunate that the Star-Advertiser did not cover Hawaii’s biggest and best-known annual bicycle event — the Honolulu Century Ride — which took place last Sunday.
More than 900 local riders and 560 from Japan participated in the ride, which began at Kapiolani Park for destinations of 25 miles (Sandy Beach and back), 50 miles (Kailua Intermediate), 75 miles (Kaneohe/Kahaluu border) and 100 miles (Swanzy Beach Park).
One sarong- and zori-clad young lady rode a rental Biki to complete 100 miles at a good pace. At every turnaround point and other rest stops, 300 volunteers provided drinks, fruit, pastries, shave ice and Spam musubis to famished and thirsty bikers. Free help was provided by bicycle mechanics and first aid stations.
Mahalo and our deepest appreciation to the Hawaii Bicycling League, volunteers and police for organizing course and rest-stop logistics, and to Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s support of safe biking on Oahu.
