I am outraged that once again the special interests and the corporate elite are attempting to buy an election.
The Chamber of Commerce Hawaii just donated a whopping $600,000 to a PAC whose sole purpose is to scare voters into rejecting a constitutional amendment that will provide the critical funding needed to ensure our keiki get the education they deserve (“Chamber of Commerce Hawaii donates $600,000 to help fight tax ballot measure,” Star-Advertiser, Oct. 3).
While the so-called Affordable Hawaii PAC claims to be concerned about middle-class and low-income families, it’s being bankrolled by millionaire executives, billion-dollar corporations, luxury developers and real estate companies that export every last dollar in profit they make away from Hawaii nei.
The Con Am is not a tax on everyone — it’s intended for wealthy individuals who own a second home valued at $1 million or more. It’s extremely disheartening that the business elite of Hawaii, who profess to care about education, are the very people fighting against the only solution on the table that can end our education crisis.
