Led by Lucy Maino’s pair of goals, the Hawaii Hilo soccer team won its fifth straight game, knocking off Holy Names 3-1 on Saturday in Hayward, Calif.
The Vulcans improved to 6-1-2 overall, 3-0-1 in PacWest play. Maino scored the first goal of the day in the 11th minute, knocking it in off a corner kick. After Holy Names (2-7-0, 0-3-0 PacWest) got the equalizer in the 22nd minute, freshman Brende Yoshizumi scored to give Hawaii Hilo the lead.

HPU sweeps at Sharks Invitational
The Hawaii Pacific men took the top five spots and the women took the top three as HPU claimed both the men’s and women’s titles at the HPU Sharks Cross Country Invitational at Kahuku Golf Course on Saturday.
The HPU men claimed eight of the top nine spots in the 8-kilometer event. The individual winner was Rickus Jacobs, who finished with a time of 26:32.9, nearly 25 seconds ahead of teammate Lukas Motschmann’s mark of 26:56.7. Amos Kipchumba (27:28.7) placed third, with David Rutto (26:56.0) in fourth and Joseph Chagoya running fifth in 28:01.2. Chaminade’s Beau Larsen (28:16.14), who finished sixth, was the only runner not from HPU in the top nine.
Jessica Suriano won the 5-kilometer women’s event for HPU with a time of 19:19.6. Robyn Kaltenbrunn was in second in 19:28.6 and Elena Ecker finished third in 19:52.2.
HPU opens golf season in fourth
The Hawaii Pacific women’s golf team placed fourth in their season-opening Saint Martin’s Women’s Invitational at the Olympia Country and Golf Club in Olympia, Wash., on Saturday.
HPU’s top finisher was Kaia Takaki, who was in sixth after she fired a 16-over-par 162 on the par-73, 5,800-yard Olympia Course. She was 11 shots behind winner Cammie Decker of Concordia Portland. Decker shot a 5-over 151. Montana State-Billings won the team event, shooting a combined 56-over 640.
