Teachers should not want the constitutional amendment that authorizes the Legislature to establish a surcharge on investment property to be used to support public education.
The amendment is wrought with vagueness. It means that the Legislature may, but doesn’t have to, establish a tax — on what? How does anyone define “investment properties”?
The money would be “used to support public education.” What makes you think you will ever see any of that money, with the past record of the Legislature or the Department of Education? How do any of us who own property know whether we will have to pay additional taxes?
No, we need a well-worded bill the spells everything out, goes out for hearings so we can all express our opinions (including teachers, please) — not just one vote in which no one has any guarantees about anything.
And what about the abysmal voting turnout? Who will actually vote on this and will they have any idea what it is? This is an insult to us all. Do it right.
