For some reason, Hawaii politicians have felt the need to grab the headlines on issues in the national news instead of concentrating on the unglamorous but important things that the people of Hawaii would like to see get done. The most recent case in point is U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono, who never did much of anything until she saw the confirmation hearing for Brett Kavanaugh as her golden opportunity.
I see homeless people being shuffled around the island while developers are given more and more zoning variances to build their empty glass towers. I see the rail transit project half-built and stopping in the middle of nowhere, with further funding still in doubt after all these years. I see the deplorable state of the on- and off-ramps of H-1 and the poor condition of our local roads.
I see Native Hawaiian families waiting a century for their “homesteads,” which are never provided. I see a doctor shortage and poorly maintained hospitals lacking proper equipment.
When will things get done?
