As someone who did not support Gov. David Ige in the recent primary election, I commend him for his choice of Judge Keith Hiraoka for the state Intermediate Court of Appeals.
Hiraoka was a well-respected attorney before he was appointed to become a First Circuit Court judge, and he is one of six people recommended by the Judicial Selection Commission to fill a vacancy on the Intermediate Court of Appeals.
Being involved in political campaigns and making contributions to candidates is something that should be encouraged of every citizen. Being a friend of the governor should never disqualify anyone for an appointment.
Cronyism is when people are appointed to positions for which they are not qualified.
Certainly, no one would argue that Judge Hiraoka is not qualified for this judgeship.
