Hawaii’s public education system is currently funded by state general funds. If the state and the teachers union want to provide more money for public education, the Legislature and the governor should use some of the general fund surplus that we have had for the several years and increase funding for public schools.
The budget surplus was about $1 billion in 2016 and about $800 million for 2017. Leave property taxes for the counties.
