America is caught up in a circle of fear that the National Rifle Association and the politicians who are beholden to it are committed to preserve. Stoking the fear of evildoers around every corner and promoting the need for armed self-defense helps create the reality of an increased number of heavily armed evil- doers in our shopping centers, schools and churches.
This is leading to an arms race within our own society, as readily available assault-style weapons are becoming the guns of choice for those who intend to harm as many of their fellow citizens as possible. As a result, more and more of these sorts of weapons are being purchased to match the firepower of possible future attackers. This, of course, delights the NRA, whose primary purpose is to support the arms industry.
Following the shooting at the Pittsburgh synagogue, our president once again fulfilled his obligation to the NRA, rather than to the public, by suggesting placing armed guards in all public areas.
Think what that would do for gun sales.
