Local 5 union workers picketed at The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach on Thursday in retaliation for the nonunion hotel supplying employees who were willing to work as strikebreakers at the striking hotels. The union also began picketing the Hawai‘i Convention Center on Thursday.

The Unite Here Local 5 union’s bullhorn- and drumming-enhanced strike pickets circle the hotels after gathering on Waikiki Beach in front of the Sheraton Moana at 7:30 a.m.
While it is a legal expression of freedom of speech, the negative and rude behavior makes Hawaii look like a petulant 3-year-old having a tantrum. Now the American Dental Association is questioning whether it will return for its annual convention (“Strike sours major convention,” Star-Advertiser, Oct. 28).
Losing a professional meeting that many mainland and local dentists look forward to attending is more than a loss of revenue; it is a loss of a needed resource for the dental professionals of the state. A loss for us all.
