I am a tourist from Arizona who attended the 30th annual Talk Story Festival on Oct. 19.
The Mission Memorial Auditorium is a beautiful venue. Thank you to the Honolulu Parks and Recreation Department, the organizers and presenters for a memorable experience. It was an evening that made me laugh out loud and brought me to tears.
It was heartwarming to see and hear from a group of local people dedicated to saving the culture, stories and language of the indigenous people of Hawaii. It was fascinating to learn about the life experiences of local children (now adults), who grew up in the islands and how they were able to blend the “old ways” — customs, language and unique ethnic expectations — with the “new Hawaii” to become successful.
I loved learning more about pidgin. It was such a refreshing departure from the typical tourist experiences and I learned so much. I appreciate “paradise” more than ever.
