A letter writer who complained about Ruth Marcus’ column about the Pittsburgh synagogue shootings (“Liberal rhetoric stirs flames of discontent,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, Nov. 4) didn’t seem to read the same article I did (“Climate of hatred caused 11 murders at synagogue,” Star-Advertiser, Oct. 31).
He accused Marcus of trying to “stir the flames of discontent and social and political discord,” but I see her reminding us of President Donald Trump’s description of Mexican “rapists” in his campaign launch and his evidence- free claims that the migrant caravan includes criminals and “unknown Middle Easterners.”
Marcus noted that Trump enjoyed supporters at a White House event chanting “lock him up,” referring to George Soros. Rather than Trump’s “narrative of hatred and violence,” Marcus suggested renewal of an American value, also taught in the Torah, of “loving the stranger.”
