A couple of thoughts about the increasing number of pedestrian deaths in crosswalks where there are no traffic lights:
>> How about a broad field, about 30 to 40 yards before a crosswalk, of either the white “button” pavement markers or the rumble strips used as lane markers where the road is narrow (e.g., between Sandy Beach and Hanauma Bay). Either of these would alert a driver and the tire sound would alert a pedestrian.
>> How about a sign on a post where a pedestrian could not miss it: “Look both ways before proceeding.”
Neither of these would be terribly expensive, and saving even one life would be worth the cost.
