The result of the congressional elections, in which the Democrats captured the House majority, brought a sigh of relief to many Americans. We now have a majority that is willing to protect the institutions of democracy, which include the free press, justice system and rule of law, from President Donald Trump’s relentless attempts (with the tacit approval of most Republicans) to dismantle the guardrails of such institutions.
Unlike the congressional Republicans who have done nothing to rein in Trump’s despicable behavior, the Democrats will fulfill their constitutional duty to act as a check on the president’s ambition to replace democracy with autocracy, as well as to investigate the tsunami of corruption in his administration.
However, the Democrats also should be mindful that voters elected them because they want expanded health coverage, a higher minimum wage, higher taxes on the wealthy and more economic opportunities. Therefore, Democrats also should focus on improving the livelihood and well-being of the poor and middle working class.
