How many people have to die before the city takes pedestrian safety seriously?
Yes, drivers need to be more attentive, but until we get red-light and speeding cameras, drivers will speed and run red lights.
And yes, pedestrians need to be more cautious, but a major issue is the condition of many crosswalks.
An audit of all crosswalks on Oahu will show many worn to the point of not being recognized as crosswalks, no light to protect pedestrians at night, no continuity to the paint being used and many buttons not working.
A suggestion: Paint them all iridescent yellow with reflective material that shows at night.
Put in lights at every crossing and reflectors on the crosswalk themselves.
Sure it is going to cost money, but what is a life worth?
