Junior forward Jake Hutchings came off the bench for 19 of his game-high 30 points after halftime and Chaminade outscored Oakland City (Ind.) 53-31 over the final 20 minutes in a 99-64 nonconference men’s basketball victory on Saturday at McCabe Gym.
Senior guard Grant Dressler added 20 points and junior swingman Tyler Cartaino 17 points for the Silverswords (3-0). Andrew Scott led the Mighty Oaks (1-1) with 20 points.
>> At Afook-Chinen Civic, senior guard James Griffin scored 23 points, including four 3-pointers, and Hawaii Hilo held off Simpson, 75-71 in a nonconference men’s basketball game.
The Vulcans (2-1), who led by as many as 16 with 8:44 to go, had lost to the NAIA Red Hawks (5-2) on Thursday, 78-75. Simpson got 21 points from Tiyon Martin and 13 points and 11 rebounds from JT Branch.
Vulcans 2-0 in women’s basketball
Senior guard Alyssa Movchan scored 16 points and Hawaii Hilo used a 13-0 run to open the second quarter en route to a 73-54 victory over Multnomah in a nonconference women’s basketball game at Afook-Chinen Civic.
Sophomore forward Allie Navarette added 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Vulcans (2-0). Milan Woods led the NAIA Lions (4-3) with 13 points.
HPU 19th at NCAA West Region
The Hawaii Pacific men’s cross country team finished 19th out of 24 teams at Saturday’s NCAA Division II West Region Championship in Billings, Mont.
The Sharks were led by senior Rickus Jacobs, who finished 43rd on the 10K course in 32 minutes, 12 seconds. HPU finished with 496 points; Chico State won the event held in snowy, 20-degree weather with 39 points.
