I never thought I’d be giving kudos to the mayor for a project, but the city’s new hygiene center for the homeless is brilliant, addressing every possible need, with restrooms, showers, laundry, pet kennels, shopping-cart storage, medical assistance and permanent housing options (“City unveils hygiene center for Oahu’s homeless,” Star-Advertiser, Nov. 20).
The Iwilei location is ideal, with the Institute for Human Services nearby and many homeless people already camped there.
This being the first of its kind in the nation, I can only hope other states will follow. It’s about time we gave meaningful help to our homeless, many of whom hold jobs and are college graduates.
If you are blessed to have a home, please understand that if you lose a job, can’t pay the rent, incur a serious medical issue and have no family to take you in, you will likely become homeless. It’s a fact of life here.
