To cut down on cars hitting pedestrians in crosswalks, Honolulu should consider eliminating the right turn on red.
If you have ever walked anywhere in this city, you know drivers routinely pull into crosswalks, and look left, but not right, before they make a right on red (or left, if it’s a one-way street) — that is, if they fully stop at all.
Police should ticket drivers for failing to make complete stops before they pull into the crosswalk. Just look at the statistics on tickets issued: The vast majority are to pedestrians, not drivers. According to the Star-Advertiser, “All told, police issued 9,671 citations for pedestrian-related violations in 2018 — 376 of those to motorists” (Nov. 4).
When drivers see pedestrians, they often wait. It’s that they aren’t looking in the right direction, and simply pull through a crosswalk.
