We recently went through the grueling process of permitting and building an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on our property, adding another rental property as the city administration has been pushing.
We had to get clearance from the Honolulu Fire Department, Board of Water Supply and Hawaiian Electric, as well as provide enough off-street parking.
We are now finding that the new home cannot get a new rubbish bin primarily due to the union contract. I contacted the opala.org folks, my City Council member Ikaika Anderson and the mayor’s office and they are all saying, “Sorry, won’t happen.” No concern over health issues and no explanation as to what to do with all the trash. The latest is, “Maybe in February.” Be aware if you are contemplating an ADU.
