Making the secondary a priority, the University of Hawaii football team secured a commitment from a speedy junior college cornerback.
Cortez Davis of Itawamba Community College in Fulton, Miss., told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he has accepted a football scholarship from the Rainbow Warriors.
Davis said he will put his commitment in writing on Dec. 18, the first day of the NCAA’s early-signing period for football. Davis, who will have two seasons of UH eligibility, will enroll in January, and participate in the Warriors’ offseason conditioning program and spring training.
“I feel Hawaii is the best fit for me,” Davis said.
Davis is 5 feet 11 and 179 pounds. He said he ran 40 yards in a laser-timed 4.43 seconds.
As a Flowery Branch (Ga.) High senior in 2016, Davis ran 100 meters in 10.69 seconds and 200 meters in 22.40 seconds at the Hall County Championships. At the Georgia 5A Region 8 meet, he was a member of the Flowery Branch relay team that ran the 4×100 in 43.87 seconds.
Davis’ father, Lee, played at Mississippi and a season with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Atlanta Falcons train at Flowery Branch.
Davis attended Tennessee Chattanooga, an FCS program, for two seasons — redshirting in 2016 and playing in 10 games in 2017. After that, he transferred to Itawamba with the intent of eventually playing for an FBS school.
This past season, Davis played in nine games, amassing 59 tackles. His 50 solo tackles ranked 32nd among National Junior College Athletic Association players.
He was named to the All-Mississippi first team for junior college players. There are 14 Mississippi junior colleges that compete in football.
Davis said he completed a UH-sponsored recruiting visit this past weekend. He said he toured the campus, met with academic counselors, visited Aloha Stadium and surfed for the first time.
“I loved it,” said Davis, who returned home on Sunday. “I feel it’s the best (defensive) scheme for me. I feel the coaches really, really care about the players. I feel they’ll be helpful.”
By choosing UH, Davis turned down offers from South Alabama and Georgia State.
UH is seeking to add to the corner position. Manu Hudson-Rasmussen is a senior whose last UH game will be the Dec. 22 SoFi Hawaii Bowl. Rojesterman Farris II will be a senior in 2019.
On Monday, freshman wideout James Green moved to cornerback.
Cornerback Akil Francisco, a second-year freshman, was cleared to practice after recovering from an injury.
